Sergei Eisenstein (22 January 1898 – 11 February 1948) was a Soviet film director, screenwriter, film editor and film theorist. Considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, he was a pioneer in the theory and practice of montage.

He was the author of the book Nonindifferent Nature: Film and the Structure of Things, trans. Herbert Marshall (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1988), which Deleuze frequently cites through his four-year seminar on cinema (1981-1985.
